Experiments at Floitental
Experiment WI6+ and FA of Excalibur WI6/R
Free standing pillars are mad - we know. But when conditions are right they can be fun to! Without any expectation Paul Mair and me started yesterday from Ginzling direction Floitental. With almost nothing information, without meeting anybody (except one nice hunter - yes it's true!), far away from any radio reception seaching for ice - this is absolutely what makes ice climbing to my favourite game. And most of the time you will be rewarded for such a motivation, like we have been yesterday. Quite deep inside the valley a very special ice line - when mother nature cooperates - is waiting: steep, short but demanding - "Das Experiment" WI6+. After the first ascentionists (Schiestl/Höllwarth, 2004) our ascent was most likely the first repetition of the route. Having some time left after this amazing climb, we decided to have a look on antother line which I already spotted while walking inside the valley. Our smiles on our faces were persisting - "Excalibur" WI6/R is a cool and demanding climb - thin ice has to be handled smooth at the start and a free standing pillar gives the crowning end. It was a perfect day!
